The Pawn moves first. It is the most numerous, the most expendable — and yet the piece that can become anything. J'Adoube I – The Pawn opens the series in its lightest state: white on white, charcoal marks surfacing through a luminous ground like thoughts emerging from silence.

Look carefully. Somewhere within the marks, a panther is present — right-side up, watching. It is the first move. Nothing is committed yet.
